BATHORY

Le groupe suédois BATHORY s'est formé a Stockholm en Mai 1983. Un des groupes les plus influents et père fondateur du Black/Viking metal, BATHORY était l'idée d'un adolescent de 15 ans, Quorthon. Après de nombreux changements de nom et de membres, Quorthon réussit à convaincre le patron de Tyfon Grammofon d'enregistrer deux pistes pour la compilation Scandinavian Metal Attack. Ces pistes attirent une attention inattendue des fans et Tyfon Grammofon demandent à Quorthon s'il désire enregistrer un album complet. BATHORY sort en 1984.

Les albums suivants de BATHORY, The Return et Under the Sign of the Black Mark sont maintenant reconnus pour leur influence majeure sur les groupes norvégiens qui popularisèrent le Black metal dans le début des années 1990. Quoique l'album Black Metal de Venom soit à l'origine du terme, ce sont les premiers albums de BATHORY qui ont réellement défini le genre: une musique primitive, un son abrasif, des paroles sataniques, un enregistrement low-fi et une voix inhumaine et criarde, à la limite de la cassure.

Avec Blood Fire Death, BATHORY ralentit la cadence pour laisser place à un style d'écriture plus épique et à l'introduction du thème Viking. En revanche, la majorité des éléments musicaux du Black metal demeurent présents. C'est avec le lancement de Hammerheart que BATHORY surprend nombre de ses fans avec un tournant radical vers le style épique et plus atmosphérique. Les paroles traitent surtout des Vikings et de la mythologie païenne. Hammerheart fait de BATHORY le pionnier d'un nouveau genre de musique extrème : le Viking metal. BATHORY avance hardiment dans cette direction avec Twilight of the Gods, l'excellent Blood on Ice et Nordland I & II.

Avec Requiem (en 1994), BATHORY change encore de style, cette fois pour un rétro-trash vicieux rappelant les groupes de la Bay Area des années 1980, style auquel le groupe reviendra à nouveau en 2001 avec le moins inspiré Destroyer of Worlds.

Quorthon est retrouvé mort le lundi 7 juin 2004 des suites d'une crise cardiaque.

L'appellation du groupe provient du nom de la Comtesse Bathory.
